Almond on Cover of Basketball Times
For
the first time ever a Rice Owl basketball
player has made the cover of a national
magazine. The October issue (vol. 29 No.
2) of Basketball Times features Morris
Almond on the 11" x 14" publication as
well as a two-page center-spread article
on the gifted scorer written by John
Akers. The story chronicles Almond's
ascension from averaging just 7.3 points a
game in 2005 to 21.9 points a game in
2006.
This marks the second-time in three years
that Rice basketball has been prominently
featured in a national publication. In
March 2005, ESPN the Magazine devoted four
of its pages to a feature story, written
by Lindsay Berra, on Rice Owls' Jason
McKrieth and Michael Harris.
Almond has recently been named preseason
Conference USA Player of the Year as Rice
was predicted fourth in the C-USA coaches
preseason poll. Two other starters return
for the Owls. Back is senior guard Lorenzo
Williams, the top-returning assist man in
C-USA, and junior forward Patrick Britton
one of the league's top defenders and
rebounders.
Fans have an opportunity to see the Rice
Owls up close when they host Incarnate
Word in an exhibition on Sat., Nov. 4 at
8:05 pm. The Owls then open the season a
week later (Nov. 11) when they host Paul
Quinn College at 7:05 pm.
