Heading
into the 2002-03 season, the Owls had some experienced
starters graduate and some young ones coming back from
injuries. The nine other head coaches in the Western
Athletic Conference thought it looked bleak for Rice
and picked the Owls to finish near the bottom in the
annual preseason poll. With Wilson the glass isn?t
half-empty, it?s half-full, and he again brought out
the best in the team. Rice beat Fresno State to earn
win No. 19 on the season. |

DRESSED FOR
SUCCESS |

What was
already common knowledge through-out college basketball
across the country was finally made official! Rice
University head coach Willis Wilson was named the 2002
Best Dressed College Basketball Coach in the country by
the internet site CollegeInsider.com.
Internet columnist Angela Lento, as she has done as a
feature story the last few years, come out with her list
of the best dressed coaches in college basketball titled
?Runway To The Fashionable Four.? In conjunction with
March Madness, Lento picked 64 of the best-dressed
college coaches, seeded them by region, then ran a
series of weekly articles during the NCAA tournament
where only the most dapper could advance to her
championship final.
Wilson, the number-one seed of the Midwest region, was
named the best-dressed, when he ?defeated? Drexel head
coach Bruiser Flint in Lento?s ?Fashionable Final.?
?It is really quite flattering,? Wilson said after
Lent?s feature story hit the World Wide Web on April 2,
2002. ?It was very creative the way she had it all set
up, and the parallels she was able to draw between the
world of college basketball and the fashion industry.
She obviously had a lot of fun finding and combining the
common themes of those two topics. She did a good job
and I certainly don?t have nay argument with her
championship pick.?
In the column series, all of which are archived on the
CollegeInsider.com web site, Wilson advanced to the
?Fashionable Four? by placing ahead of (in order) Doug
Oliver of Idaho State, Cy Alexander of South Carolina
Sate, Kyle Macy of Morehead State and Melvin Watkins of
Texas A&M. Wilson then won the best-dressed title with
back -to-back decisions over Gary Waters (Rutgers) in
the semi-finals and then Flint in the championship.
